There are a number of known risk factors for anaphylaxis:
- Genetics - families who have children that have anaphylaxis have a higher risk of those children producing their own children who also have anaphylaxis
- Some people with existing asthma - sometimes the asthma may be so severe that is causes an anaphylactic reaction, especially if the asthma is triggered by an allergen that is really severe. Studies also show that people who have both asthma as well as food allergies may be at increased risk for having a life-threatening anaphylactic reaction to the food (which is partly exacerbated by the asthma)
