Erythema multiforme is a skin rash which can occur in babies and toddlers, but seems more prevalent in boys (than in girls).

Erythema multiforme is thought to be triggered by a viral or bacterial infection (especially the herpes simplex, or cold sore virus), but it may not necessarily be caused this way and in some cases, there is no known, obvious cause. A reaction to medication is another possible cause of this skin rash.

Treatment of erythema multiforme

There is no treatment for erythema multiforme, as it normally resolves on its own, without the requirement for treatment.

If the baby or toddler also has a fever or is unwell, a doctor must be consulted as this could be more serious and requires prompt medical attention and treatment.
